Active Reading Toolbox
Effective reading is a conversation between you and the author.
1. Pre-Reading
Before diving in, look at the title, subheadings, and any bold text. This creates a "mental map" that helps your brain categorize information faster.
2. Context Clues
Don't stop for every unknown word. Look at the sentences before and after. Usually, the "surrounding flavor" defines the mystery word for you.
3. Visualization
Turn words into a movie. If it's a story, imagine the setting; if it's data, imagine a chart. Visual memory is significantly stronger than verbal memory.
The "Questioning" Technique
To truly master reading, you must ask three questions while you read:
-
1
What is the main point? Look for the thesis in the first or last sentence of a paragraph.
-
2
What is the author's tone? Is it neutral, persuasive, or critical? Tone changes how you interpret facts.
-
3
So what? Why does this information matter? Connecting text to real-world impact ensures long-term retention.
